The touble is these players of "the golden generation" are going to be two and a half years older when the next world cup comes along.Which makes most of them over 30.and by all accounts there ain't too much coming through. They ought to get there because they are in a very weak group ,Croatia apart, but if they don't with Capello where do they go from there?

"As Capello will now find out, it's a funny old country."

Great article. That's exactly my point but from a Welsh perspective you can multiply that by ten

Here in Germany the economic power of the Premier League is always regarded as a worthwhile example. All the top stars play there, so they must be doing something right. I'm not so devoutly confident of that rationale.

To be honest Doc,it's the economic power of Murdoch with a little help from Setanta. If all of a sudden the Sky and Setanta money was taken away there would be nothing left just 20 more Leeds Uniteds. It's really a house of cards, but while all this money is washing about in the English game most people think everything is wonderful even when the national team is crap ,all the good coaches are foreign (and I include Alex Ferguson in that) and most of the very good players are as well.Anyway, Ich wuensch euch alle eine frohe Weihnachten (hope my grammar wasn't to bad) or Nadolig Llawen,or even Happy Christmas.

last month england are booted out of the european championships by croatia and russia, english football is in crisis etc.
one month later, fabio has a new job, 4 english teams are in the knockout rounds of the champions league, and 3 english teams are in the uefa cup. suddenly everything is fine with english football
we are deluding ourselves

as op says, its all just a house of cards, the league is increasingly uncompetitive and fans of clubs outside the top 4 are drifting away from the game because they see no realistic hope of winning anything. clubs like aston villa, man city, bolton, everton, blackburn are failing to fill their stadiums because fans have become "consumers". there aren't the numbers who would go to every game no matter what - they feel sidelined by the premier league and those rich clubs which are killing off the league.
thing is, without fans IN THE STADIUM, there is no football. Have you ever seen one of theose "games" played behind closed doors because of crowd trouble? it is just totally boring.
so its time for the authorities to remember the fans in the stadium, not just those at home with a TV remote control, a credit card and the hotline to the club pay-tv channel

gone off topic a bit here, sorry about that....

Franz Beckenbauer once called the UEFA-Cup as "Cup der Verlierer". Why, because the Champions League rules. In Spain, England, Italy and Germany we now have a 2 class system, a reinforcing divide between teams with access to the  "surplus product" of the Champions League and the rest with a mere guest status, with "no realistic hope of winning anything".
In my view, the CL will become so central in economic terms, it will arouse so much greediness and lecherousness, that it will spawn all sort of struggles. Top teams vs. the rest of the league, CL vs. the importance of other championships, UEFA vs. FIFA, EU (!!!) vs. FIFA and so on.

A colonisation of the life world of football fans through market imperatives, an evisceration of a whole culture and life style.
